Do-Nen-Gappi: 50 Years And Then Some

This project is a portrait of time—of how fifty years on Earth can shape, shift, or seemingly stand still. Photographer Hiroshi Yamauchi (myself) and his subject, Hiroyuki Kuribayashi, were born on the same day, just hours apart. This coincidence became the catalyst for a one-year photographic documentation of Kuribayashi and his family, marking the shared milestone of turning fifty.

In December 2023, I asked Hiroyuki—my lifelong friend of over four decades and a neighbor just a few blocks away in Kyoto—if I could follow his life with my camera for a year. He agreed without hesitation and with the support of his wife Mami, welcomed me into their home. Their two daughters, Niko and Shiho (4 and 2 years old), quite literally came into the picture.

Hiroyuki is a man of many hats—or rather, talents. A dedicated fan of UK rock, he plays in various local bands with longtime friends. A former chef, he now handles most of the family’s meals, as Mami cares for their young daughters.

In preparation for Shiho’s arrival, Hiroyuki transitioned to a job as a delivery truck driver, transporting wholesale goods from the city’s central market to clients in the area. The early-morning schedule—waking at 3:30 or 4 a.m., starting work by 5, and returning home by midafternoon—allows him to spend more time with his family, often just in time for Mami’s daycare pickup run.

This project is not only about Hiroyuki—it is also, in a way, about myself. Through him, I reflect on time, family, labor, aging, and friendship. What does it mean to share half a century with someone, walking parallel paths just a few blocks apart?

同年月日：50年とそれ以上のもの

このプロジェクトは、「時間」の肖像です。50年という年月が、人をどのように形づくり、変化させ、あるいは時に立ち止まらせるのか。それを写し取ろうとする試みです。写真家・山内浩（私）とその被写体・栗林裕志は、数時間差で同年月日に生まれました。この偶然と私たちがともに50歳を迎える節目を理由に、栗林とその家族の1年間を写真で記録したプロジェクトです。

2023年12月、私は40数年来の親友であり京都市内で自宅から徒歩数分の場所に住む栗林裕志に、この話を持ちかけました。彼は快く応じてくれ、妻の真美も同意してくれました。そして、彼ら2人の愛らしい娘たち―当時3歳のニコとまだ1歳になっていなかったシホも、文字通り写真に加わることになりました。

栗林は、いくつもの顔を持つ人物です―いや、むしろ多彩な才能の持ち主と言うべきでしょう。熱狂的なUKロックファンであり、長年の仲間たちと共に地元の音楽シーンに参加しています。元料理人でもある彼は、家庭の食事をほぼ一手に引き受けています。

第二子・シホの妊娠がわかった際、栗林はトラック運転手に転職しました。市内の中央市場から周辺の顧客へ卸売商品を届ける仕事です。家族にとって都合の良い時間帯に働けるというのが転職の大きな理由でした。通常午前3時半から4時に起床し、5時ごろに出勤、夕刻に帰宅します。ちょうど真美が娘たちを保育園に迎えに行く時間と重なります。

このプロジェクトは、栗林家の1年の記録であると同時に、私自身の節目を考えるものでもあります。彼を通じて、私は時間、家族、労働、老い、そして友情について考えを巡らせました。ほぼ数時間の誤差内で50年という年月を同時進行で歩んできた誰かと、そして今やその時間をわずか数ブロック離れた場所で共有するとは一体どういうことなのか―それを自身に問う道程でもあるのです。
